The artist, who has no biographical identity and is commonly referred to as the “Painter of the Papal Procession,” was an excellent ceramist who depicted religious and mythological scenes and episodes from the lives of the Medici pontiffs, Leo X and Clement VII. In full coherence with the figurative principles of the sixteenth century, the painter tried his hand at grotesque decoration and the reproduction of heraldic insignia, in a refined creative and figurative synthesis. A recent volume, edited by Alessandro Alinari, Il Pittore della processione papale, un ceramista toscano del Rinascimento (ed. Polistampa 2020), has examined a nucleus of works attributed to the painter, with comparisons and cross-references, establishing fixed points and incentives for further investigation.
