MIDeC in collaboration with Triennale Milano

13/05/2023 - 09/07/2023

From May 13 to July 9, 2023, MIDeC International Museum of Ceramic Design, in collaboration with Triennale Milano, presents "The SCI, Italian Ceramic Society at the 1st Biennial Exhibition of International Decorative Arts in Monza, May 1923." A celebration of an anniversary: at the prestigious venue in Laveno Mombello, in the province of Varese, the May 13 opening at 11:30 a.m. is open to the public. On the centenary of the 1st Biennial Exhibition of International Decorative Arts, MIDeC remembers and re-enacts the presence of SCI, Società Ceramica Italiana in Monza. A century ago, the exhibition, which was instrumental in the birth of Italian design, had opened in the magnificent Villa Reale in Monza designed by Piermarini, and aimed every two years to show the general public the decorative arts understood in the broadest sense, to stimulate involvement and a solidary collaboration between industrialists, artists, and artisans. Many of SCI's products are now the property of the MIDeC, some already in the exhibition showcases, many in the Museum's storerooms, others still loaned by collectors: they will all be on display, curated by Anty Pansera and Giacinta Cavagna, with a special staging designed by set designer Ivo Tomasi, in the ground-floor rooms devoted to temporary exhibitions. The exhibition enjoys important sponsorships such as those of the City of Milan, the City of Monza, and the Società Umanitaria to testify to the link of the three institutions with the Monza Biennial, under the banner of the CAMNU Consortium (Consorzio Autonomo Milano Monza Umanitaria), the Consortium of the Park and Villa Reale of Monza, AiCC Italian Association of Ceramic Cities, and the Cologni Foundation, for more than twenty-five years a promoter of cultural, scientific and popular initiatives for the protection and dissemination of art crafts.
