The seven hundredth anniversary of Dante's death commemorates the poet's presence in Sarzana in 1306. The exhibition Dante and Giotto. Dialogue and suggestion, at the Lia Museum until 19 December 2021, displays precious works on a gold background from Dante's time that are part of the Museum's permanent collection, together with others on temporary loan. On display are illuminated manuscripts, tempera-painted parchments, volumes published between the 16th and 19th centuries and precious objects of sumptuary art. These include a wooden reliquary box, which highlights the link between Dante and Giotto. Another example of fine workmanship is offered by the portable altarpiece (anconetta) by Fra' Pietro Teutonico, an artist of transalpine origin who was active in the Assisi worksite, which depicts the Annunciation and Crucifixion on sheets of gilded and graffito glass, according to the medieval technique of engraved design on gold leaf fixed to the glass, then covered with a thin glass layer that incorporates it.
