The exhibition The Walls of Wonders. Court exchanges between the Gonzagas and Europe, opens the exhibition year 2022 Mantova: l'Arte di vivere, and was inaugurated a few days ago at Palazzo Te. It presents rare decorative apparatuses made of leather which, from the 14th to the 16th century, covered the walls of court palaces to insulate the large halls from the cold. They were furnishings of complex technical execution and embellished with refined decorations that contributed to exalting the prestige of the family, attentive to the refinement of the furnishings and the pleasantness of the rooms. The leather panels, called "spalere" in the documents of Mantua, were made by workshops active in different regions, especially in Venice, which maintained the strong Hispano-Moorish tradition of that workmanship. The corami represent a rarity and the specimens on display, subject to restoration, have been lent by museums and private collectors.
