The rose window, the upper part of the large four-light window in the Chapel of Santa Croce, in the Bolognese basilica was made between 1464 and 1466. The preparatory cartoons were made by the painter Michele di Matteo and the stained-glass window executed by the master glassmaker and German Dominican friar Jacob Griesigner, later to become Blessed Giacomo da Ulma, according to a custom of conventual cenobia that, in medieval centuries, safeguarded and restored ancient glassmaking techniques. The major difficulty in the restoration, conducted (2017-2019) by Studio Fenice of Bologna, depended on the advanced state of corrosion of the weathered glass support and rusting of the metal structures. In addition to the conservative intervention of the entire cycle, targeted investigations were carried out to enable the best preservation of the work, which is the subject of recent scientific publications on the complex case history of interventions to ancient stained glass windows. The restoration of the chapel windows, carried out in several tranches, was recently concluded. Basilica of San Petronio, Bologna Visitors' entrance 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
