After seven years of great diagnostic and technical effort, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure of Florence has completed the restoration of a large tapestry (m 4x5) from the collection of Jean-Baptiste and Louis Carrand (inv. 2196 C.), now on view in the Armory Room of the Bargello Museum. The work is part of an even larger cloth by French-Flemish master tapestry makers, illustrating the Stories of Charlemagne and Orlando and in particular the battle between Christian knights and Saracens according to the narrative of the medieval poem Chanson de Roland. The tapestry, made of wool and silk to accentuate the luminous details, was in a poor state of preservation due to the presence of cuts, tears and especially gaps, covered with painted cloth, which was removed and reintegrated with the insertion of the warps and wefts to ensure the narrative and static completeness of the large panel.
