In the past, perfume and its containers were reserved for a few privileged people who with these objects sought to show off their wealth and their love of the “marvelous.” Developed over time with meticulous and passionate research, the collection is very extensive, with more than 850 pieces ranging from balsamari of the first centuries after Christ, to chatelaines worn at dances or used as small love tokens. The exhibition, curated by Chiara Squarcina and Monica Magnani, presents a selection of 225 scent bottles divided into 10 thematic areas: Chronology, Toys, Souvenirs, Techniques, Nature, Love Tokens, Containers, Chatelaines, Tiny and Masterpieces, displayed on the basis of an original interpretation that reveals their intrinsic significance: not only as containers for scent but almost as a “manifestation” of a mood or feeling.
On May 27, 1923, the Salsomaggiore spa complex, designed by Ugo Giusti and decorated by Galileo Chini, whose 150th birth anniversary falls on this day, was inaugurated.
