KIMONO, reflections of art between Japan at Museo del Tessuto in Prato

29/04/2023 - 19/11/2023

The exhibition, which has just opened at the Prato Museo del Tessuto with the collaboration of the Fashion and Applied Arts Museum of Gorizia, presents 50 Kimonos, for men and women, dating within the first half of the 20th century, from the Lydia Manavello collection. The precious garments, made of textured, embroidered or printed silk using complex techniques, illustrated in a section of the exhibition, are placed in direct comparison with paintings, graphics and textiles partly preserved at the MDT in Prato and partly loaned by private collectors. In addition to admiring these iconic garments, which bring the public closer to the sophisticated elegance of Japanese culture, appreciated in the West until the late 19th century, lesser-known traces of the influence in Japanese culture of the European artistic avant-garde are captured. The linear and geometric motifs of Futurism, Cubism or the decorative elements of secessionist currents are welcomed into Japanese art, giving rise to a singular and reciprocal figurative balance.
