From the Sword to the Cross. The restored reliquary of St. Galgano

01/03/2023 - 05/11/2023

The precious reliquary, stolen in 1989, is returning to the Archdiocese of Siena. It was found, along with other valuable 14th-century liturgical objects, thanks to the tenacity of investigators and, after, delicate restoration work, the Vatican Pinacoteca dedicated the exhibition Dalla Spada alla Croce. Il reliquiario di San Galgano restaurato (From the Sword to the Cross. The restored reliquary of St. Galgano) to this important find. The work, made of copper, gilded silver, embossed, chiseled and translucent enamels, cast in the concavities of the low relief, is a masterpiece of Sienese goldsmith's art and depicts episodes from the life of St. Galgano, including the episode of the sword thrust into the rock, an object of town worship and symbol of peace. The reliquary will be visible until Nov. 5, 2023, in the evocative rooms of the so-called "Crypt" of Siena Cathedral, surrounded by 13th-century frescoes that preserve the original color scheme.
