Roman and medieval crafts from Nero’s Theater in Rome

In the area of the inner courtyard of the Palazzo della Rovere, or of the Penitentiaries, in Rome, near St. Peter's Basilica, stood Nero's Theater. Architectural remains and objects of value and common use have emerged. In that place, which the sources hinted at but had not been identified, the emperor organized theatrical and singing performances. Columns with valuable white and colored marble, stucco decorations with gold leaf, alabaster capitals, musical instruments made from animal bones and ceramic utensils were found, attesting to the presence of fine craft activities. In addition, objects for liturgical and devotional functions from the early Christian and medieval periods have been found in the upper layers, documenting the route that pilgrims traveled to St. Peter's tomb, a prayer destination.
