The extensive collection of works of decorative art donated by French collector Louis Carrand (1827-1888) to the Bargello Museum in 1888 includes 140 delicate Limoges enamels: works of refined beauty and extreme fragility, so much so that they required constant monitoring by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure. The three triptychs on copper were restored, studied and then placed in a suitable micro-conditioned display case equipped with chemically inert supports. The volume illustrates the history of the masterpieces from the art-historical context in which Jean-Baptiste and Louis Carrand worked and the collecting passion in the 19th century for enamels made in France at the beginning of the 16th century, the exchange relations with Italy, and Leonardo da Vinci's interest in enamel art with iconographic comparisons and detailed charts. A section describes the stages of restoration, material analysis, execution technique, different state of degradation, and specific conservation interventions appropriate to the different problems of the works.
