The (new) Museum of Costume and Fashion at Palazzo Pitti

The Museum of Costume and Fashion has just opened in the Palazzina della Meridiana in the Pitti Palace, following the thorough structural and exhibition renovation of the former Costume Museum, which opened in 1983. It was and is the only Italian state museum entirely devoted to Fashion. On the occasion of the opening there is an exhibition of 50 dresses and accessories from the 20th century. They are theatrical costumes, such as the cloak-kimono that belonged to Eleonora Duse, conceived and created by Mariano Fortuny, the evening gowns of refined elegance, including those designed by Emilio Schubert for the most famous actresses of the 1950s, which influenced the fashion of those years, such as the colorful mises of Elsa Schiaparelli. Witness the culture of the 1980s of the 1900s some dresses, which became icons of innovative and transgressive fashion, such as the metallic tunic made by Gianni Versace for Patty Pravo, Jean Paul Gualtier's dress-lingerie for Madonna. From next April, three large rooms will house the permanent collection, which, in its entirety, includes 15,000 dresses from the Renaissance to the 19th century.
