The Messiah Stradivarius goes home to Cremona

Unlike most violins made by Antonio Stradivari and known for their grandeur of sound, the Messiah (1716) has never been played. The violin owes its fame to its amazing like-new condition, with the  varnish nearly intact, and it has set the stylistic benchmark for luthiers all over the world. Kept in Oxford at the Ashmolean Museum, next door to the prestigious University, since 1939, the violin has never been shown elsewhere. In 2016, on the occasion of its 300th anniversary, it has been sent back to Cremona to celebrate a historic event for the luthier’s art world. Info: www.museodelviolino.org
