In 1973 the Archaeological Group of Montelupo accidentally spotted near an area where there were public wash houses, an ancient well, more than 30 meters deep. Between the late 14th century and the end of the 16th century it was used as a dumping ground by the medieval and Renaissance furnaces active in the town's historic core. Thousands of fragments have emerged, of which more than 600 have been restored. Works and sections contributed to the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Ceramics and involved internationally renowned scholars. A new history of Montelupo ceramics has emerged. Little by little, many masterpieces of Renaissance majolica, preserved in major museums around the world, were recognized as valuable products of that center. To celebrate the 50th anniversary, a study conference will be held Dec. 2 at the Museum of Ceramics, with the presentation of a docufilm that recounts the discovery of the Well of the Lavatoi, through period accounts and the stories of the protagonists of that discovery. This is followed by an exhibition The Ceramics of Montelupo. Identity and Future, until January 7, 2024 www.museomontelupo.it
