The exhibition Pulcherrima Testimonia. Hidden Treasures in the Archdiocese of Florence is set up in the complex of the Basilica of San Lorenzo (Donatello Hall). It presents a wide selection of more than 200 works that are part of the artistic heritage of the Florentine diocese. The exhibition is the final result of a long (2000-2019) and complex work of inventorying 271,000 computerized records, funded by the Fondazione CR Firenze, for the enhancement and protection of little-known and often unpublished works. Some of refined patronage, others of popular simplicity such as votive offerings and sacred furnishings, from churches and country parishes or even from domestic settings, expressing feelings of devotion. The exhibition is divided into three sections: the life of Jesus Christ, the life of Mary, and the figures of the saints as witnesses to the Gospels. One section is devoted to works recovered by the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. There are works made with various materials and techniques, testifying to the refinement of artisans and decorators, such as a copper cross from the 13th century, an imposing Crucifix in semiprecious stones and chalcedony, an ivory pyx from the Norman period, and a chalice from the 1300s.
