Overtaking. When Italy hit the accelerator, 1946-1961

The photographic exhibition traces the difficult years of the immediate post-war period up to the economic well-being of the early 1960s. Protagonist of the Italian scenario is the 1962 film Il Sorpasso (The Easy Life), directed by Dino Risi, which alludes to the overcoming of the past and the impetus towards a desired but indefinite progress. It is the image of a country that was moving towards modernity amidst incoherencies, firmly-rooted traditions and new ideals. This fabric of contradictions emerges from the photographs on display, many of which are conserved in the Istituto Luce’s Historical Archive and in the Publifoto collection conserved at the Study Center and Communication Archive (CSAC) of the University of Parma, but also taken by non-professional photographers who captured the immediacy of details that, today, rigorously document an era.
