Oscar Ghiglia: The Years of the Novecento Italiano at Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Firenze

07/04/2022 - 13/09/2022

Oscar Ghiglia (1876-1945), a painter from Livorno but a Florentine by training, has been the subject of a gradual critical reappraisal in recent years. The exhibition Oscar Ghiglia: The Years of the Novecento Italiano at Medici Riccardi Palace in Florence, through more than fifty works from private and public collections, highlights the pictorial refinement traceable to the Macchiaioli tradition, combined with the suggestion of European painting, particularly Cézanne, up to the juxtaposition with the twentieth-century current. Also evident is Ghiglia's knowledge of 16th-century art, which he expresses in the balance between volume and color and in his observation of optical effects. Of particular beauty are the still lifes, "warmly alive," which communicate domestic customs, and utensils, even the most everyday, are the protagonists of a scenario charged with humanity. And it is precisely the relationship between object and nature that gives rise to a magical realism. The exhibition catalog is published by Sillabe publishing house, Livorno.
