The exhibition Dear Joe Colombo, you taught us about the future under way in Milan at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Gam, illustrates the creative journey of the designer (1930-1971) through objects, which even today, so many years later, are surprising for their modernity, inventiveness but also for their respect for the skill of artisans able to mold materials, traditional or obsolete, into innovative forms. These include the Elda armchair (1963), in fiberglass, the Acrilica lamp and the Smoke tumbler, with its solid line, asymmetrical and essential base, conceived in 1964 in agreement with the master glassmakers of Cristalleria Arnolfo di Cambio in Colle Val d'Elsa (Siena), and still in production. The functional structure of that glass is in tune with hand agility and ergonomic principles, as the thumb supports the receptacle while leaving the other fingers free for the cigarette, in a pair of convivial customs that was proper to the 1960s and that, today, is adapted to support other iconic instruments or facilitate quick finger foods.
