All’Ombra di Leonardo. Arazzi e cerimonie alla corte dei papi

21/03/2023 - 03/09/2023

The tapestry, made of silk and silver and gold threads preserved in the Vatican Museums, reproduces Leonardo's famous fresco in Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. It was given in 1533 by Francis I of France to Pope Clement VII, Julius de' Medici, for the wedding of his son Henry of Valois to Catherine de' Medici, the pope's niece. The tapestry, of which, perhaps, Leonardo followed the different phases of execution during his stay in Amboise, expresses the same narrative sequence, emotions and feelings as the Gospel episode, although there are variations in the architectural setting from the Milanese painting. Some symbolic elements refer to the French tradition of the king and the Savoy dynasty, by maternal ancestry. The precious fabric is featured in the exhibition All'Ombra di Leonardo. Tapestries and Ceremonies at the Court of the Popes, until Sept. 3, 2023, and is a singular testimony to the dynastic entanglements, the rituals of the papal court, as well as a fine example of manual skill, traceable to Flemish textile manufactures.
