Fashion and Manners: Style and Costume in Italy 1900-1960 in Arezzo

Set up in the lower church of the Basilica of St. Francis, an exhibition that traces the changes in fashion from the early 1900s to 1960 through the presentation of a selection of clothes, accessories, photographs, paintings, magazine illustrations, but also a careful choice of objects that have become icons of society’s transformation. The exhibition, divided into sections, one for each individual decade, begins with the imitation of French fashion at the beginning of the century, followed by the artisan creativity of seamstresses, the exuberant vivacity of clothes in the 1930s, the innovation of department stores with ready-to-wear clothing, as opposed to the most exclusive sartorial ateliers, up to the moment of female emancipation in the 1960s. A section of the exhibition, curated by the students of the Fashion and Theater Costume Design section presents reproductions of garments worn by the women painted in Piero della Francesco’s frescoes.
