All about the Italian goldsmith tradition

Italy boasts one of the oldest goldsmithing traditions, rooted in Etruscan times and reaching its highest expression during the Renaissance, in the splendid courts of the Italian lords.

Under the Medici rule, the characteristic goldsmiths’ workshops of Ponte Vecchio were founded in Florence. Today, know-how and tradition combine with contemporary research and design, making the Florentine jewellery and silverware workshops a world-renowned reference point.

Since the early Middle Ages, many master craftsmen expert in gold working have also been active in Milan, as the toponymy of the city itself testifies: the historic Via degli Orefici was one of their privileged locations. A mastery that is perpetuated from the golden altar of Sant’Ambrogio to the great religious goldsmith’s workshops and the sophisticated ateliers of the many contemporary jewellers.

Another tradition that has historical roots in the Milanese territory is that of silver. Some excellent workshops active since the beginning of the twentieth century carry on, between savoir-faire and design, the arduous techniques of chiselling, embossing, engraving and plate beating.

Masters of the delicate filigree technique, particularly in gold, are still active in Sardinia, another Italian centre of production of excellence, while the processing of the so-called “red gold”, coral, has for centuries been the prerogative of the Neapolitan artisans of Torre del Greco and those active in Trapani, Sicily. Not only precious jewels, but also sculptures and furnishing objects come from the historical workshops of these skilled masters. Works that often and willingly go to occupy spaces in prestigious museums.

But it is not only the raw material that makes a precious object…from hard stone pearls to colourful murrine, from bright rock crystals to amethysts, jades and resins of every shade, up to the very light macramé lace: these are the imaginative materials of the bijoux created by eclectic designer-craftsmen in traditional shapes, often inspired by historical jewellery, or futuristic, almost sculptures to wear.
