The Etruscans: a fascinating journey through the preciousness of craftsmanship

The Etruscans. Journey Through the Lands of the Rasna exhibition set up in the rooms of the Civic Archaeological Museum of Bologna until May 24, 2020, retraces the different phases of that civilization between the ninth and first century BC, following an articulated path from southern Italy, Umbria, Tuscany to the Po Valley. Differences emerge, but the inventiveness and refinement of the craftsmen, creators of dynamic bronzes, lively polychrome colours placed on canopies, to transcend the funerary use, or even elaborate wooden furnishings, is homogeneous. A particular charm comes from the silver gold jewels: hair clips, hair clips and refined earrings in amber and gold with a geometric shape. The creative irony is evident in objects such as the hand shaped poker. Following the exhibition itinerary, it is easy to understand how Etruscan artefacts were so evocative of the craftsmen of the following centuries, attracted by the goldsmith's technique of granulation and filigree or even by the harmony of dry lines which, after centuries, were taken up by art deco.
