They serve famous designers and world famous artisans, but also customers who want to create elegant spaces with exclusive tapestries, fine rugs, bespoke household linens and so forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just consider <strong>the province of Genoa<\/strong>: it was already the worldwide capital of textile manufacturing in the 1400s. Today, as in the past, <strong>damask<\/strong> <strong>is still produced in this zone on the ancient shuttle, lampas and macram\u00e9 looms that are typical of the Liguria region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other centres in Liguria include <strong>Zoagli<\/strong>, the <strong>city of velvet<\/strong>, <strong>and Lorsica, famous for damask<\/strong> since the 1500s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/italia-sumisura.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Tisserands-84.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"http:\/\/italia-sumisura.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Tisserands-84-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Tisserands-84\" class=\"wp-image-1159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/italia-sumisura.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Tisserands-84-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/italia-sumisura.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Tisserands-84.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditions are also very strong in <strong>Calabria<\/strong>, where skilled weavers continue to work on fascinating medieval looms that originated in <strong>Lombardy<\/strong> (for weaving robust rag rugs) and the <strong>Aosta Valley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 18th and 19th centuries introduced much innovation to the textile sector. Workmanship was still artisanal, but new machinery opened the way <strong>to very fine warps, reduced thickness and woofs of all types<\/strong>. Examples are still extant in <strong>Perugia<\/strong> and in <strong>Tuscany<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rugs and tapestries<\/strong> would deserve a chapter of their own.
