The skill of the craftsman is to understand the nature of the stone in front of him, to see the potential and support it, pulling the object or work out of the stone that contains it.<strong> A bit like Michelangelo<\/strong>, one of the great Renaissance artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The traditions of <strong>Bassa Bregaglia<\/strong> and <strong>Val d&#8217;Aosta<\/strong> involve working in <strong>soapstone<\/strong>, a ductile and malleable material still used to produce ancient objects such as <em>laveggi<\/em>, pots that have existed since 70 AD and <em>furagn<\/em> (containers with lids for food storage); but also other modern products for the home, from coffee services to stoves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tuscany<\/strong> was once famous for its <strong>Firenzuola stone<\/strong> (high Mugello) and the ability of master craftsmen to work in <strong>marble<\/strong> and <strong>alabaster<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/italia-sumisura.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Ferrari_6s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/italia-sumisura.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Ferrari_6s-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari_6s\" class=\"wp-image-3311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/italia-sumisura.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Ferrari_6s-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/italia-sumisura.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Ferrari_6s.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone knows <strong>Carrara marble<\/strong>, and the area of \u200b\u200bPietrasanta (Lucca) at the foot of the Alps, where today, from the famous sculpture studios, come unique pieces and limited editions of the most important sculptors in the world, making it a major centre for marble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another interesting area is <strong>Volterra,<\/strong> whose <strong>alabaster<\/strong> has been worked since the Etruscans. Today, with its honey colour, or orange-brown, it lends itself to decorative objects for lighting and sculptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An enchanting Unesco world heritage site, the <strong>Sassi of Matera<\/strong>, an area of cave dwellings carved into<strong> white crumbly rock called tuff<\/strong>, produces lighting fixtures, building materials and furnishings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is like the rock of <strong>Lecce<\/strong> whose malleability makes it useful for creating fascinating works.
